RAINBOW assuming the lead from the ENDEAVOUR in the third race of the 1934 Match on September 20th off Newport, R.I., just before the latter tacked for the third time after rounding the mark. This was the turning point of the series. ENDEAVOUR having won the first race on September 15th by 2 minutes and 9 seconds and the second race on September 18th by 51 seconds. The third race was intended to be a 30-mile leeward and windward one but owing to a gradual shift of wind from NE by E to E by S the last leg was close reach.
ENDEAVOUR with her owner, T.O.M. Sopwith, Esqre., at the wheel gained 6 minutes and 39 seconds on RAINBOW during the 15 mile run. On the reach home, through a brilliant display of helmsmanship on the part of H.S. Vanderbilt, Esqre., and C. Sherman Hoyt, Esqre., RAINBOW never tacked and passed ENDEAVOUR, which had made two tacks and RAINBOW lead at the finish by 3 minutes and 26 seconds. The DEFENDER won the next three races by 1 minute and 15 seconds on September 22nd, by 4 minutes and 1 second on September 24th, and by 55 seconds on September 25th. The Syndicate which built RAINBOW consisted of Messrs. H. S. Vanderbilt, Fredk. W. Vanderbilt, A.G. Vanderbilt, W.K. Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, G.F. Baker, G.B. Lambert, E.S. Harkness, H.H. Rogers, Charles Hayden, G. E. Roosevelt, W.G. McCullough, J.P. Day, W.P. Chrysler, Ogden L. Mills, Marshall Field and A.P. Sloan, Jr. Her afterguard included Messrs. H.S. Vanderbilt, C.
