Buttersworth depicted two more successful defenders of the America's Cup in Yachts Madeline and Sappho, Off Sandy Hook Lightship. In the center of the canvas Madeline, who claimed victory in 1876, sails on a sharp starboard keel, in front of the red Sandy Hook Lightship, which is likely acting as a race marker. Sappho won the Cup in 1871.
