This was an important year, as it was the first defence of the Cup, when Mr. James Ashbury made a challenge with his very successful yacht 'Cambria' from England.

After much factious discussion, it was decided there would be one race over the regular course against the N.Y. Club fleet including the 'America'. The eventual winner was 'Magic'.
