DESCRIPTION SITE :

5 x 7 glass plate negative taken by Rosenfeld and Sons circa 1920. Port quarter view of the cutter RESOLUTE under sail. RESOLUTE was the last Herreshoff designed America's Cup defender. She was modified to sail under J Boat rules, but she was not technically a J Boat. Her helmsman was Charles Francis Adams. In 1928 she was re-rigged as a Marconi sloop. She sailed until 1939. She was designed and built by Herreshoff in Bristol, RI 1914. Handwritten on original negative sleeve: "4215F / 2nd Race Resolute". Note: RESOLUTE lost this America's Cup race, as well as the first race.

NOTES AMERICA-SCOOP :

SECOND CUP RACE CALLED OFF WHEN TIME EXPIRES

SATURDAY, JULY 17, 1920 : Challenger is outsailed from start

Resolute took the lead in yesterday's race immediately after the starting signal and was never headed from that time forward. Instead of receiving a handicap from shamrock, Resolute looked as though she could have given one.

No cup- hunting skipper ever received a more decisive drubbing than William P. Burton got yesterday from Charles Francis Adams. From the time the preparatory signal was flown until the race was abandoned it was apparent the visitor had no chance.
