5 x 7 Defender safety negative taken by Rosenfeld and Sons on July 8, 1937. View of the crew aboard the J Class sloop RANGER. Seen from Left to right: Rod Stephens, Olin Stephens, Professor Zenas Bliss, Mrs. Vanderbilt, Mr. Harold Vanderbilt, and Arthur Knapp. This crew raced on the U.S. defender, RANGER, in the 1937 America's Cup race. Mrs. Vanderbilt was the first woman to crew aboard a Cup defender. Rod and Olin Stephens were the founding partners of Sparkman and Stephens, and renown yacht designers. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt controlled the New York Central Railroad, he also owned Marble House and The Breakers in Newport, RI. Zenas Bliss was a professor at Brown University, he was the navigator for Ranger in the 1937 America's Cup, and Arthur Knapp, Jr. was the sail trimmer. Names of subjects handwritten on original negative sleeve. Sleeve stamped: "81798F JUL 8 1937 / 4361".
