Americas cup boat Madeline. Schooner yacht America in 1881, used as a test bed for new sail patterns. She was sailing off Point Judith, Rhode Island. Every time America sailed it was an event heavily covered by the news! So beloved was the old schooner that when new owner Gen. Benjamin Butler painted her hull white, there was a national uproar to paint it black again. He did.
