DESCRIPTION SITE :

1930 was a stormy summer but that never deterred the big class yachts which are shown in this painting racing in one of the Solent events of that year. The nearest yacht is Herman Andrea's 'Candida', designed and built by Camper and Nicholson's in Gosport in 1929, as was H.F.Paul's 'Astra' shown ahead of her, built the year before.

By now gaff-rig was being surpassed by the new Bermudan cutter rig, yet in heavy weather the legendary gaff-rigged 'Lulworth' fared better. To windward in the distance is Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V, launched earlier that year, coming from the same yard, the first yacht to be built to Lloyd's A1 scantlings requirements. Of composite construction she was designed to the American universal rule in order to take part in the America's Cup Challenge later in 1930.  Alas -  against the formidable American yacht 'Endeavour' with her famous new modern gear, she proved unsuccessful.
