Her bowsprit splintered in a prestart collision in 1885, the British Genesta begins to make repairs while the New York Yacht Club committee boat approached to offer her the race on the ground that she had been fouled. Sir Richard Sutton, owner of the Genesta, sportingly refused and volunteered to race again. He lost, but won widespread American good will.
