Jacques La Grange, 'Racing in a Storm, 1885', color woodcut, edition 500, 1934. Signed and numbered '21/500' in pencil. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper, with margins (1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches), in excellent condition. A work from La Grange’s celebrated series of woodcuts 'Drama and Color in the America's Cup Races'.

La Grange’s work shows the cutter 'Genesta' challenging the defender the 'Puritan' in the second race of the 1885 America's Cup. When the boats came to the starting line, a strong northwester was blowing white caps, and both boats sailed downwind at great speed. The Genesta, clearly outfooting the Puritan, rounded the mark fully an eight of a mile ahead. The race was the closest and most beautiful that had ever been sailed for the America's Cup, and many yachtsmen believed that the Genesta would have won if she had not persisted in lugging her topsail which was not drawing. The 'Puritan', designed by Edward Burgess and built in Boston, was financed and skippered by John Malcolm Forbes.
