DESCRIPTION SITE :

Oil on board painting, possibly schooner yacht AMERICA, in the Strait of Dover off England, circa 1855, signed by J. E. Buttersworth. Framed in triptych with 1959.1362 - oil painting of VOLUNTEER leading the squadron in race on NY Bay, signed J. E. Buttersworth on back, and 1959.1363 - oil painting of yachting in Boston Harbor, signed on back J. E. Buttersworth. There is some question as to whether or not this is AMERICA. Fore topmast (had one later, not in 1851) and the fact that the deadeyes lead to rail instead of outboard to channels at deck level.
