DESCRIPTION SITE :

Oil on canvas 26” x 36” (66 cm x 91.5 cm) This image shows the 1871 America's Cup defender Columbia close hauled on starboard tack under 4 working lowers; flying-jib and jib-topsail. Her top- hamper carries fore and main gaff topsails and a large fisherman staysail. Off Columbia's stern; a second schooner; this with a white hull and more of a 'fisherman' type in appearance; sails downwind in the opposite direction. The view is off what appears to be Castle William on Governor's Island in Upper New York Bay.
