DESCRIPTION SITE :

ENDEAVOUR surges by, following VELSHEDA out of Harwich in 1934. Despite the light wind she moves swiftly in the calm water under a large Genoa jib and mainsail. The mate stands by the lee rigging, where the steel bar shrouds connect to channels on the tumbled-in sides. Mr Sopwith is at the wheel, with Captain Williams standing by. the second mate sits on deck by the winch for the starboard shifting backstay and all hands aft appear to be watching an opponent to windward.
The stocky figure in navy blue suit and cloth cap standing behind the helsman is Mr Good, a well known Harwich fisherman; he is on board for the day to act as local pilot and provide his extensive knowledge of tidal sets and eddies, depths of water and local winds so that the most could be gained from conditions. Most of the other competitors in the big class when racing around the British coast took the advice of similar local men, usually fishermen, who were well respected for their special knowledge. They took no physical part in the handling of the yacht.
The subtly hollow shape of the counter and the triangular section of the 'Park Avenue' boom are shown clearly. [JL in The Big Class Racing Yachts by John Leather, page 160-161.]
But the same picture is in other prints, captioned 1936, or ENDEAVOUR II 1938 or 1939. Nothing relevant is written on this copy of the photograph.

Photo by Douglas Went. It is used in Yachts and Yachting page 1284, year not known.
