DESCRIPTION SITE :

The crew of SHAMROCK V, at anchor before her transatlantic passage in 1930. Mate Lemon Cranfield stands by the guardwires at the extreme left. Pride of place is taken by the gramophone, obviously the joy of the younger hands who have plenty of records spread out on the foc's'le hatch.
The guardwires and stanchions were only fitted for the ocean passages, being regarded as unnecessary and totally unacceptable for racing or coastal sailing. the large stocked anchor carried on the starboard bow was of the type much favoured in the larger yachts, where quick holding on a short scope might be required; the severe windage of a tall mast and its considerable rigging added to the problems of a vessel with a deep draft which tended to 'sail' around her anchor.
