DESCRIPTION SITE :

The third race for the America's Cup of 1899, held in a very fresh breeze, was a 15 mile run to leeward and then a 15 mile beat to the finish off Sandy Hook.

In the painting both yachts have rounded the leeward mark with Columbia leading Shamrock I. Columbia is sending the spray flying as she plunges to windward. She has dropped and furled her topsail. Shamrock I kept her topsail up, but was overcanvassed on the beat to the finish, allowing Columbia to increase her lead and thus win the America's Cup. Columbia was designed by Nat Herreshoff and built at the Herreshoff yard in Rhode Island. The second of his designs to win the America's Cup. Shamrock I was designed by Fife of Scotland for Sir Thomas Lipton. This was Sir Thomas Lipton's first challenge for the America's Cup
