The keel sloop ResoluIe—the first defender built under the 1905 universal rule— was a drastic departure from earlier skimming dishes. Her smaller hull and reduced sail area limited her speed: She could reach only 13.5 knots. as opposed to the 15 knots attained by more radically designed pre-1905 racers.
