A diagram from a 1930 issue of the Illustrated London News shows some novel features of Shamrock V, that year's America ‘s Cup challenger. One valuable innovation was a belowdecks winch (middle row, left of center) for hoisting and lowering the mainsail; it reduced the number of men needed for that job from as many as 30 to only two, and also kept the deck clear of rope.
