DESCRIPTION SITE :

With the build up this year to the 2024 Americas Cup I’ll be telling the story of the J class and the America’s Cup through a series of paintings. This painting depicts the birth of the j class in 1930.
Oil on canvas 24x36inches
Birth of the J Class.
Between June 11th and June 17th the 4 newly built j class yachts built for the defence of the 1930 Americas cup race together along with The 1919 Americas Cup defender Resolute and her close rival Vanitie. Both Vanitie and Resolute had been converted to race with the new contenders as trial horses. Initially Weetamoe proved to be the most successful boat and the season saw some very close races between her and the eventual Defender Enterprise.
The painting depicts the forth race of the series and shows Weetamoe and Enterprise leading the fleet off Eatons Neck. Yankee and Vanitie are shown on stbdtack whilst Whirlwind and Resolute hold on to port.
