DESCRIPTION SITE :

Shamrock V - the first British yacht to be built to the J-Class of the American Universal Rule. She was Lipton’s last effort to win the America’s Cup, which she failed to do in 1930. She is pictured here in June 1931 after a short bowsprit had been added to enable her to conform to the J-Class regulations that governed the Big Class from 1931. In October 1931 Lipton died and Shamrock V was bought by T.O.M. Sopwith. Photo by Kirk of Cowes.
