YANKEE SHOWS THE STERN TO VANDERBILT YACHT
Charles Francis Adams Sails Craft in impromptu race in Narragansett Bay.
NEWPORT, R. I., June 2.—The sloop Yankee of Boston today showed her stern to Harold S. Vanderbilt's new Rainbow . It was Yankee's first brush with the yacht she will have to beat for win the right to represent your country in America's Cup races.
The race was an impromptu one in Narrangansett Bay and the first appearance of Yankee in these waters since 1930, when she was an unsuccessful candidate to race the Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V.
That year, Yankee was eliminated by Enterprise, sailed by Vanderbilt.
Yankee, Rainbow and the latter's trial horse, the 20-years-old Vanitie, left their moorings in Brenton's Cove at noon. Outside the harbour, however, the fog was so thick that Vanitie immediately returned to the anchorage without hoisting her sails.
Yankee was sailed by Charles Francis Adams, who will handle the big yacht during the official trials which begin June 16. June 16.
