RAINBOW IN FRONT IN "NO-RACE" SAIL
Home seconds ahead of Yankee, but is unable to finish within the time limit.
NEWPORT, R. I., July 12.—In one of the oddest races ever sailed between America's Cup sloops, Rainbow finished 11 seconds ahead of Yankee yesterday over 30 1/2-miles.
Yankee was ahead in only a zephyr of air when she lost suddenly all the breeze there was. Rainbow's sails were full and she passed Yankee to leeward with only 100 meters to go. They were moving so slowly than the 11 second margin of Rainbow was less than a quarter of her length.
The contest, fourth of the observation series to select a cup defender, was declared only unofficial and no race as the elapsed time exceeded was more than the time limit of five and a half hours for 30 miles. Rainbow's time was 5:59 minutes 27 seconds.
Weetamoe has her overweight bronze centerboard installed again temporarily, with the permission of the Cup committee, and is ready to race Today.
