YANKEE MEETS RAINBOW TODAY IN FIRST AMERICA'S CUP TEST
By Associated Press.
NEWPORT, R. I., June 23.—The test of sail that will determine which of the three big sloops shall meet T. O. M. Sopwith's Endeavour, latest British challenger for the America's Cup, will be resumed off here tomorrow, with Yankee, Boston candidate, pitted against Rainbow, Harold S. Vanderbilt's newly constructed entry, for the first time.
Threatening weather caused the America's Cup committee to postpone a scheduled contest today, although the committee's forebodings failed to materialize and the the sun gleamed brightly all afternoon. Yankees and Rainbow took advantage of the break in the weather and went out for tuning-up exercises. All who saw Yankee agreed that the Boston boat's sail fitted more comfortably than before.
Last time out the headboard pulled out of her mainsail, putting her out of the race, but since that mishap new ropes have been sewed in and all hands, including her skipper, Charles Francis Adams, former secretary of the Navy, are confident, the Boston boat can show the way to any of her rivals in a decent breeze.
While Rainbow and Yankee match tacks, Weetamoe, Frederick Prince's entry, and Vanitie, Gérard Lambert's old Cup contender, but now ineligible, will hold a sparring contest over the same route.
Tomorrow's races will wind up the opening series of preliminary races and the Cup candidates will not meet again until July 7.
