ADAMS YACHT WINS IN NEWPORT TRIALS
Yankee defeats Rainbow in the contest for America's Cup Race Entry.
By Associated Press.
NEWPORT, R. I., July 18.- Yankee, Charles Francis Adams' contender for the America's Cup, added to her string of victories in yesterday's
trial defeating Rainbow by five seconds on the course of 22 1/2-mile course. While Yankee and Rainbow stayed within 34 seconds of each other throughout yesterday's match sail, Weetamoe, third of the Americans boats, and Vanitie remained idle.
Yankee got away to a 34-second lead on the first third of the course, but had her lead cut down to seven seconds as the yachts reached the 17 mile mark. Coming to the finish line, she lost two seconds to the New York boat, skippered by Harold S. Vanderbilt.
Yesterday's contest between the contenders for the right to meet Tom Sopwith's Endeavor was one of the closest recorded since the trials opened.
