Yankee third in 32 mile Test, but owners Happy to trim Rainbow.
BY TOM HORGAN,
Associated Press editor.
MATTAPOISETT, Mass. August 11 - Vanitie crossed the finish line ahead of the three
candidates for the defense of the America's Cup - Weetamoe, Yankee and Rainbow - after a race of 32-mile today from Newport, R.I., and everyone was happy except Rainbow supporters.
Gerard Lambert, the owner of Vanitie, was jubilant, even though the time
allowance Vanitie is compelled to yield the cup candidates technically deprived her of a victory. Twenty years-old Vanitie is ineligible for defense purposes and Lambert put her in commission to furnish the other three a trial horse and because he loves racing.
Those aboard Frederick Prince's Weetamoe, which came in second, rejoiced because the time allowed by Vanitie gave Weetamoe the honors of the day, and not many victories have come her way.
Yankee's third-place finish was entirely satisfactory to her supporters, for it meant she again led Harold S. Vanderbilt Rainbow home. She is skipped by Charles Francis Adams, former Secretary of the Navy. The Boston boat has never been beaten by Rainbow and they are natural rivals for the honor of meeting the British challenge, Tom Sopwith's Endeavour.
