YANKEE IS GIVEN JOLT BY RAINBOW
Latter Evens Final Trials With Surprising Victory.
Meet Again Today.

Newport, R. I, August 28.— Yankee's campaign for the honor of defending the America’s Cup next month has met with an abrupt and surprising check.
In the same light breeze in which the Boston sloop had shown to such advantage previously. Yankee trailed Harold S. Vanderbilt’s newly-constructed Rainbow, the only other contender, by more than 3 minutes in the fifth race of the final trials yesterday.
For once, Charles Francis Adams, former Navy Secretary and pilot of Yankee, was outmaneuvered at the start and Rainbow led her home over the 30-mile triangular course by 3 minutes 7 seconds.
The result left Rainbow and Yankee all even on the basis of the final trials with each holding a victory over the other. Taking all the preliminary races into consideration, however, Yankee still holds a wide lead over the Vanderbilt sloop.

Number of Races a "Secret.”
THE two contenders were slated for another brush today but how many more times they were to be called upon to race was up to the Selection Committee of the New York Yacht Club, entrusted with the cup defense.
Almost as much interest was aroused yesterday by an informal duel between the British challenger. Endeavour, and Vanitie, Gerard Lambert’s old and now ineligible cup boat, as by the Yankee-Rainbow race.
Endeavour and Vanitie kept well away from the defense candidates during the greater part of their five hour workout, but as they were heading for home, running off the wind, no one could escape the conviction that Endeavour was able to hold Vanitie on at least even terms and probably better. This brought no reasurance to the defense aspirants, for the weather was light, and usually in light air Vanitie has been able to give the American candidates a very irksome run for their money.
