Rainbow Looms As Cup Defender; Is Well Handled
BY LEONARD M. FOWLE, Jr.
NEWPORT, R. I„ August 31.— Harold S. Vanderbilt's Rainbow, the New York syndicate’s boat, loomed as the defender of the America’s Cup next month against Endeavour after she had defeated Yankee, sailed by the peerless Charles Francis Adams, by 2 minutes and 21 seconds yesterday in the third completed trial race between the pair.
The outcome of the race, which was a fairly good test of the boats over a 30-mile triangle in a variable offshore wind, gave a decided edge to the Burgess designed craft, for she outsailed the Yankee on two legs and lost but a mere 15 seconds to the Boston sloop during a 10 mile beat up the wind. Prom start to finish, Rainbow always had the upper hand.
Following the race, the America’s Cup Committee announced that the two boats would meet again. This decision should set at rest forever the senseless rumor that the Selection Committee would pick Rainbow at any cost.
Rainbow scored her latest victory because she was better handled and at the same time sailed just as fast as Yankee through the water. Until the last three races, better handling had been Yankee’s forte, but, since the first trial event in which the pair met, it has been the crew and afterguard of Rainbow which has had the jump on their rivals.
