Weetamoe Sails Last Race Into Junk Heap
BRISTOL, R. I., April 9 1938.—Once the half-million dollar pride of a New York Yacht Club syndicate which built her for international America's cup yacht races of 1930, the class J sloop Weetamoe was destined today for the junk heap.
Sale of the Weetamoe to a firm of New York junk dealers was made by Commodore Chandler Hovey of Eastern Yacht Club.
Weetamoe appeared to be a potential candidate to oppose Sir Thomas J. Lipton’s Shamrock V in the America’s cup yacht races of 1930, but soon dropped out of the trials.
Sold to Frederick H. Prince, of Boston, in October, 1930, Weetamoe piled up an impressive record of 36 victories in 57 races during the 1931 through the 1933 yachting seasons.
