After his scare in 1934, Vanderbilt took special pain to build a fast boat next time around. She was Ranger, which dominated the 1937 Cup season as thoroughly as Reliance had done in 1903. Here, Ranger (left) thunders by Rainbow in a trial race. Both boats carry quadrilateral jibs whose stretch is controlled by two sets of sheets.
