DESCRIPTION SITE :

This photograph of the stern of Endeavour gives a good impression of the size of a large racer. Her freeboard aft was 5 feet 6 inches and five or six men could comfortably stand and move about on the end of the counter, clear of the shifting backstays and mainsheet. The second mate is engrossed on the port quarter and a guest stands by the mainsheet. The helmsman watches the upper luffs of the headsails for a breeze and sits, unusually, on a folding stool; this suggests that it is probably the owner, Mr Sopwith, who sometimes used a large fender as a seat in calm or quiet weather.
