DESCRIPTION SITE :

Shamrock V in 1933. Her rig had been lightened and altered since the Cup challenge of 1930 and a stump bowsprit with an unsightly bobstay and martingale to spread it has been added. She was then owned by Thomas Sopwith and the hull was painted white instead of the 'Shamrock green' of Sir Thomas Lipton's time. She is going well to windward over the foul Solent tide with another of the class to windward. The dinghy is carried amidships, inverted aver the saloon skylights. The mast section has been reduced but the boom appears as heavy as ever. The set of the seams of the mainsail is interesting, showing the sail shape on the wind, and the lower pocket has a much shorter batten than it provides for.

The yacht is standing out into the worst of a fierce tide and the crew are alert to tack when their rival does: the helmsman will then come round to cover her. It appears that Shamrock V is being sailed by an amateur helmsman and the skipper (in white) is standing to leeward of the helm. There are twenty-one professionals on deck, the full complement allowed by Class J rules. The strong tabling and patches at the clew and leech of the mainsail in way of the clew reef cringles and cyclets are clearly shown.
