DESCRIPTION SITE :

The crew of the Shamrock V, at anchor before her transatlantic passage in 1930. Mate Lemon Cranfield stands by the guardwires at the extreme left. Pride of place is taken by the gramophone, obviously the joy of the younger hands who have plenty of records spread out on the foc's'le hatch.

The guardwires and stanchions were shipped only for ocean passages, being regarded unnecessary and totally unacceptable for racing or coastal sailing. The large stocked anchor carried on the starboard bow for passage making was of a type much favoured on larger yachts, where quick holding on a short scope might be required; the severe windage of a tall mast and its considerable rigging added to the problems of a vessel with a deep-draft which tended to "sail" around its anchor.
