DESCRIPTION SITE :

The last season in which gaff-rigged cutters challenged the new Bermudian racers in the British big class was 1930. Shown in light weather are (left to right) Astra, Lulworth and immediately beyond her Britannia, Candida , the new Shamrock V and the old 23 Metre White heather.

Lulworth was the last first-class racing cutter launched with a gaff rig. She was designed by Herbert White and, like Terpsichore, built at Itchen by White Bros. (Southampton) Ltd. She always appeared to have more freeboard and a bolder hull than most of her predecessors in the class and was a frequent prizewinner. When the photo was taken, her captain was Archie Hogarth of Portincross, Scotland, with a crew from Essex, the Clyde and the Solent.

In 1926 Lulworth raced the schooner Westward in a private match around the Isle of Wight. After 60 miles Westward won by 4 feet.
