REF : 0 EDITION : 1920 DATE : 1920 COURSE : 0 DESCRIPTION SITE : The postwar launch of Sir Thomas Lipton's America's Cup challenger, Shamrock IV, at City Island, New York, in 1920. Captain Albert Turner and first mate Edward Heard stand amidships . When the yacht was examined in its cradle after being laid up in America throughout the First World War, her builders and crew were dismayed to find that the cradle had buckled and her long ends, left partly unsupported, had sagged and distorted. Little could be done about this and she was made ready to race against the American sloop Resolute, which had the advantage of being developed until 1915.
