DESCRIPTION SITE :

Lines of the American sloop Resolute, 1914. This N. G. Herreshoff design was built at his Bristol yard to compete with the new Vanitie and Defiance to be Cup defender against Shamrock IV. These relatively small first-class yachts were designed to the American Universal Rule.

The main dimensions of the Resolute were 100 feet overall length, 75 feet waterline, 21 feet 1 1/2 inch beam and 13 feet hull draft extended by a centerboard. The shape of the hull is typical of Herreshoff's work, with high slack bilges which resulted in her being tender; she heeled quickly even in light winds. When sailing, she was not very fast on the reach and pulled up a big wave forward of the mast and another off the lee quarter. The hull was constructed of steel and bronze and was a very light, weak structure. She worked a great deal and was several times returned to the builder's yard for repairs and strengthening, though she lasted well enough to defend the Cup in 1920 and to be refitted for schooner racing in 1926.
