DESCRIPTION SITE :

Jubilee was the Boston candidate for the defense of the 1893 America's Cup. It was designed by Frank C. Paine. It measured about 124' overall, with a cutter-type rig with fidded topmast and fixed bowsprit. It lost in the trials to the Vigilant which went on to win that year. According to The Pictorial History of the America's Cup Races by Robert W. Carrick, "General (Charles J.) Paine who had managed the last three successful defenders, now tried his hand at designing. Assisted by his son, John, he produced the lines for Jubilee, an unusual steel vessel, with a combination fin keel and centerboard. Her dimensions were slightly shorter all around than all of the other defense candidates." Captain John Barr was the captain. Jubilee withdrew from the 1893 America's Cup trials after a rigging failure.

NEWPORT, R.I., Aug. 2. -- George J. Gould has won a Goelet cup with his yacht Vigilant. She was in luck to-day, and won the much-coveted trophy through the Defender's breaking down. The Defender had led all around the course, and was only five miles from the finish when her gaff snapped just about the middle of the spar, and she was put out of the race.
