REF : 299 EDITION : 1893 DATE : COURSE : 0 DESCRIPTION SITE : The fin-keel cutter Pilgrim was built as a defense candidate for the 1893 America's Cup by a Boston syndicate headed by Bayard Thayer, General Charles Taylor, and William Amory. It was designed by Stewart and Binney. It measured about 124 in length, and like the other candidates (Vigilant, Colonia, and Jubilee) it had a cutter-type rig , with fidded topmast and fixed bowsprit. It also carried an experimental keel, weighted with ten tons of lead, which proved impractical. It withdrew in the trials after a rigging failure, and Vigilant went on to become the 1893 defender.
