À partir du 8 juillet, Shamrock IV est dégréé pour sa traversée de l'Atlantique et le 18 Juillet 1914, sous le commandement du capitaine Turner, il quitte Portsmouth pour les États-Unis, escorté par Erin, le bateau à vapeur de Lipton. Il arrive aux Açores le 28 juillet, après une traversée de sept jours et trois heures depuis Falmouth...

... Les projets de Lipton ont été modifiés le 7 août, lorsque le colonel Neil, responsable d'Erin, a reçu un message annonçant le début des hostilités entre l'Allemagne et l'Angleterre. La Première Guerre mondiale avait commencé. Shamrock IV et Erin ont reçu l'ordre de naviguer vers le port britannique le plus proche, Saint George aux Bermudes, où ils sont arrivés le 9 Août 1914. Ensuite, Shamrock IV est arrivé à New York le 13 Août 1914. Il a été désarmé et mis au sec au chantier naval de Shewan, au pied des Vingt-septième Street et South Brooklyn.
