Image of COLUMBIA, a 132' Herreshoff cutter built 1899 in Bristol, Rhode Island 132' Herreshoff and the cutter CONSTITUTION, built 1901 in Bristol, Rhode Island, racing each other during the New York Yacht Club Defender elimination races off Newport, Rhode Island. Visible in image: starboard beam view of CONSTITUTION, in the foreground, and COLUMBIA to the right of the image. There are two steam yachts in the distant background to the left. Everything in the image is in silhouette as the sun sets in a cloudy sky. Handwritten on negative sleeve: “39. Aldridge / Constitution and Columbia ? / Newport, R.I. / Sept. 1, 1900. / Box 4”.
