Construction. On May the 15th 1934, the William Starling Burgess Design J-Class Rainbow was launched at the Herreshoff Yard in Bristol, Rhode Island. She was built to defend against Endeavour in 1934. Harold S. Vanderbilt skippered Rainbow with his tactician, W. Sherman Hoyt,in 1934 against T.O.M. Sopwith's Endeavour. Rainbow lost the first two races but won the last 3.
