8 x 10 glass plate negative photographed by Charles Edwin Bolles in the Erie Basin, Brooklyn, NY, 1895. View of 123' Herreshoff keel cutter DEFENDER (built 1895 in Bristol, RI) in dry dock. Visible in image: starboard quarter view of cutter in dry dock, men on deck, on stairs down to bottom of dry dock, and in punts, the water is almost all drained. DEFENDER defeated VALKYRIE III in the America's Cup Races of 1895. The men in the water by her keel are preparing to scrape and clean her manganese bronze bottom.
