DESCRIPTION SITE :

Rare hand-colored silver bromide photograph depicting the yacht 'Columbia', the winner of the 1899 America's Cup. The image bears the photographers blindstamp which states 'COPYRIGHT 1899 C.E. BOLLES, BROOKLYN N.Y.' Columbia is beautifully framed within the image. The crew members are scattered around the deck. The partially visible private signal flying from the gaff looks like the Herreshoff manufacturing private signal. Given the size of the image, it is very crisp and is a fine example of Bolles' work. This large photograph is one of only two hand-colored images by Bolles. (PH-430)

Condition of photograph: There is some minor toning, but the photograph is in generally excellent condition. Below the image is an original paper label stating 'COLUMBIA.'
Condition of frame: The photograph has a contemporary archival double mat with a cut-out for the printed name. The wood frame with gold leaf inner edge was probably added in the 1980s.
Dimensions of Image (sight) H - 21 1/4; W - 15 5/8 inches
Dimensions of Frame H - 30 1/2; W - 26 inches
