'Britannia' vs. 'Vigilant' by Martyn Mackrill (British b.1961) is a watercolor on paper. Watercolors are made from finely ground colorants suspended or dissolved in water. This creates transparent washes or stains of color. Due to the paint's viscosity; the artist generally works on a flat surface to prevent the paints from flowing downward with the effects of gravity. The traditional paper used is made from cotton; also called rag paper as at one time it was made from scraps of cotton fabric. The paper is made wet; providing an excellent absorbent surface for the watercolor paint. Due to the transparent nature of the medium; artists painting in watercolor begin their coloring with the lightest areas; such as the sails and clouds in this example; and adding the progressively darker layers. While this medium is excellent for flowing areas of color; the fine details such as rigging and crew figures must be carefully painted when the paper is dry.
