A beautifully executed watercolor painting titled "America" signed at lower right by the noted English marine artist THOMAS GOLDSWORTHY DUTTON (c. 1819-1891), the subject a schooner with tiny figures off a coast; actually, a very special, historical schooner: "America" was a 19th-century racing yacht and first winner of the America's Cup international sailing trophy. On August 22, 1851, America won the Royal Yacht Squadron's 53-mile (85 km) regatta around the Isle of Wight by 18 minutes. The Squadron's "One Hundred Sovereign Cup" or "£100 Cup", sometimes mistakenly known in America as the "One Hundred Guinea Cup," was later renamed after the original winning yacht. And so, we have the "America's Cup". This would date our work to 1851 or soon thereafter. A lighthouse at far left and steam ship at far right complete the scene. This is a rare original work of the artist, who is best known today for his lithographs of maritime scenes. Though English, (and the work like other known pieces have his English address 60 Lansdowne Rd./Clapham Rd. SW written on the back in old brown ink), the artist did not paint only English ships. Note the tiny American flag flying at the top of the rightmost sail. This antique work is in very good condition considering it is more than likely at least 150 years old. Measurements are 12" by 10" as framed. **A rare, early, significant painting of the very first "America's Cup" winner, by an important marine artist of the 19th century. See the wikipedia listings for Dutton and the yacht "America".
