Mast stay arrangements compared. Yankee's rig in 1930 had only two spreaders and the long masthead stood with its topmast shrouds but without an upper spreader or jump strut.
The L. Francis Herreshoff-designed Whirlwind, also of 1930, has both, besides diamond stays.
Endeavor (1934) had distinctive shrouds of solid rods fitting into specially made connectors, all giving a heavy look to her rigging, which was strong and reduced windage considerably. The distinctive wide crosstrees contributed to her staying.
In contrast, the Istalena, one of the few M-class yachts built, is dwarfed and dainty, though at 87 feet overall she was larger than the 12-meter class boats, which averaged 65-70 feet.
