Le 17 Avril, ou juste un mois après son lancement, le nouveau bateau a démâté dans une course avec Shamrock I à Weymouth Bay sur la côte sud de l'Angleterre. Cet accident a mis un coup de frein aux essais. Il a fallu près de quatre semaines pour obtenir un nouveau mât et que les essais recommencent. Les sept régates entre Shamrock I et Shamrock III avant l'accident ont montré de façon concluante que le nouveau bateau était largement supérieur au challenger de 1899.
