Fife having failed with Shamrock I to make possible the realization of Sir Thomas' high ambition was to be put aside, and George Lennox Watson, Americans learned through the press, would be prevailed on, it was hoped, to accept a commission to design the second challenger.

Three American yachts of the cup class were put in commission at the opening of the sailing season of 1901. One was Columbia, defender of 1899, the other was a new “Herreshoff" boat built for a New York Yacht Club syndicate and called Constitution, and the third was built in Boston, for Thomas W. Lawson, and was called Independence. An authentic detailed description of this boat is given in another chapter of this book.

Final preparationsOn August 11th, at 11.30 P.M., Shamrock II passed Sandy Hook, a little less than sixteen days out from the Clyde. She was promptly taken to Erie Basin, where all challengers since Genesta had refitted, and there received her racing spars and gear, which arrived by steamer August 4th.
