On July 24, 1914 DEFIANCE is out of the Cup trials. G.M. Pynchon, head of syndicate, officially withdraws tri-city yacht.
On August 5, 1914 the New York Yacht Club's Summer cruising fleet was formally disbanded at noon at a signal from Commodore Dallas B. Pratt's flagship Sea Fox. The race for the cup offered by King George V. of England was declared off upon receipt of the news that England had declared war on Germany.
Sir Thomas Lipton had telephoned the Associated Press that on account of the declaration war by Great Britain, he has withdrawn his yacht from Cup race.
Resolute will then be towed to Bristol and hauled out. Vanitie will towed to Lawley's Yard in Neponsit, where she was built, and laid up.
The America's Cup was postponed and did not resume until 1920.
