Leslie was a self-taught painter who was influenced early on, growing up and sailing the waters of Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Her education includes studies in at Texas A&M University, Texas A&M Galveston and Texas State University. Following school, a lark as a SCUBA instructor on a charter live-aboard-dive boat in the Bahamas forged an unexpected career path and subsequent focus of her art.
First a mate, then a captain, Leslie’s yachting encompassed both sail and power vessels, ranging between New England and Alaska. Tortola served as a yachting home base for a number of years. Her paintings often reflect the observations of the local water-men, working harbors, boatyards and fishing craft. When not in the Islands or New England, Leslie divided her time between South Florida and the Texas Gulf.
Her work has been shown in galleries in Galveston and Houston, TX; Palm Beach, FL; Maine, Bonaire and the British Virgin Islands. Permanent collections can be found at the Lavity Stoutt Community College, Tortola, BVI and the Rosenberg Library Museum Galveston, TX.
Leslie worked primarily in oil and watercolor and in Texas she was a member of the Watercolor Arts Society, Houston, the Galveston Art League, Rockport Center of the Arts and the Lake Worth Art League.
Awards include: D’Feet Cancer Best in Show – 2010; the McGivney Prize, Galveston – 2013 and Best of Show, WAS-H, Houston – 2013. Several of her paintings are featured in the Galveston Art League: A Century of Island Art 1914-2014.
