Douglas Norman Went (1887-1970) a well known East Coast photographer. He is mainly known for his maritime pictures, but he would photograph anything. Mr Douglas Went had original hopes of being an artist, but started business as a photographer.
Douglas Went was born at Myrtle Lodge, Plough Lane, Great Bentley, Essex on 23 March 1887, second son of Arthur Soloman Went, brick manufacturer, and his wife Alice Ruth née Hammond.
He married at All Saints' Church, Brightlingsea, Essex on 15 September 1937, Barbara Adelaide Rand. In 1939, Douglas started a business as a photographer with his studio at 35 Tower Street, Brightlingsea, Essex with his wife Barbara. Member of the Ipswich Art Club, he exhibited from 33 Tower Street, Brightlingsea in 1953, two oils 'When Mist Drifts in from the Sea' and 'Low Tide Evening' and a further three pictures the following year.
His photographs were widely published - in magazines such as Yachting World, Yachtsman, Country Life, The Field, Essex Countryside, and in books by authors such as Hervey Benham, John Leather, J Wentworth Day. Mersea Museum has over 700 of his photographs, and there is also a significant collection in Brightlingsea Museum. His own book 'Sailing', an illustrated yachting book, was produced in 1951.
Douglas Norman Went died at his home at 35 Tower Street, Brightlingsea on 24 May 1970 leaving a widow, two sons and a daughter.
