Levick, Edwin (1869-1929) USA

Category: PHOTOGRAPHS

EdwinLevickV2Born in London and educated in France, the son of a former British Consul in Suez, Mr. Edwin Levick came to America in 1899.
He was raised in the Far East near the Red Sea and, with no other playthings at hand, he soon learned to build and sail boats, assisted by the native children of the locality. It was here that he acquired the love of the water which he carried with him through life.

BookED2SDuring his first few years in America Mr. Levick earned his living by writing on general new topics, which occasionally were illustrated with his own photographs. In this manner his camera studies attracted attention and gradually the writing was dropped and his time was devoted exclusively to photography.

Mr. Levick specialized in marine photography, in which profession he has established for himself a national reputation. Photographs of regattas and all kinds of artistic marine studies have been his particular interest, and reproductions of his work have been published in books, newspapers and magazines such as the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, and the New York Herald Tribune as well as Rudder and Motorboat Magazine. The excellence of his work is attested by his winning, in 1928, of the blue ribbon of the Photographers Association of America, awarded him for a series of his marine studies.

BookED3SMr. Levick’s work has included other subjects such as polo, golf, tennis, horseracing, winter and other sports but marine views have always been his specialty. He has made numerous striking pictures about the waters of New York.

Mr. Levick died on November 26, 1929 at his home at 173 Mt. Joy Place, New Rochelle, N. Y., as the result of heart disease at the age of 61. He had lived there for the past fifteen years, where he was a member of the New Rochelle Yacht Club and a member of its Art Committee as well.
Mr. Levick is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Hooper Levick, a daughter, Miss Kathleen Levick, and two sons, John and Philip. His business is to he carried on under the name of Edwin Levick, Inc., of which organization his son John is president.
