Shamrock II was launched from the yard of Messrs. William Denny & Brother at Dumbarton, on the river Leven, April 20th, and was towed to Cowes, where she received her sails from Ratsey's lofts, and thence to Southampton for her spars. The boat was given her first trial under sail May 4th, and for a week was jogged about The Solent and neighborhood, generally in company with the first Shamrock.

For this second boat, which was named Shamrock II, Lipton went to George Lennox Watson for the design. Watson was probably the foremost designer in England at that time, if that adjective can be applied to any one man in a profession. His cutter Britannia was one of the most wonderful racing yachts ever turned out.

August 13, 1901 : Shamrock II., Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger for the America's Cup, rested off Sandy Hook Bar after a fortnight's journey across the Atlantic until daybreak yesterday.

Sir Thomas Lipton bequeathed his collection of photographs, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia to the Mitchell Library where it is still housed. In 1999, the collection was showing signs of degradation and conservation was required. Unilever, who now own the Lipton brand, were approached and funded the conservation and digitisation costs.
